Job Summary
The Temporary Works Designer (TWD) is responsible for the design, analysis, and preparation of engineering documentation for temporary works, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, company procedures, and project requirements.
The role involves developing safe and practical temporary works solutions, preparing design calculations, coordinating the preparation of engineering drawings, liaising with construction teams and the Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC), and performing independent design checks when appointed.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare temporary works designs, structural calculations, and technical documentation, and coordinate and technically review the preparation of engineering drawings in accordance with applicable standards, project specifications, and approved Design Briefs.
- Develop safe, practical, and economical temporary works solutions considering construction methodologies, site conditions, available materials, loading requirements, and construction sequences.
- Design temporary works systems, including formwork, falsework, scaffolding, excavation support, structural shoring and propping, working platforms, crane foundations, temporary steel structures, and temporary structural supports.
- Review Temporary Works Design Briefs and coordinate with the TWC to ensure that all necessary technical information, design requirements and loading conditions are adequately addressed.
- Review design calculations, technical reports, and engineering drawings submitted by subcontractors and specialist suppliers, and perform independent design checks of designs prepared by others when formally appointed as Temporary Works Design Checker (TWDC).
- Identify temporary works loads imposed on permanent structures and coordinate with the permanent structure designer to obtain the required review and approval before implementation.
- Provide technical input to Method Statements and Risk Assessments, ensuring that design assumptions, loading restrictions, construction sequences, and residual design risks are adequately addressed.
- Coordinate with the TWC, construction teams, subcontractors, and consultants to resolve technical queries, assess constructability, and ensure that temporary works designs are compatible with the proposed construction methodologies.
- Identify design-related risks, critical construction stages, loading restrictions, stability requirements, and necessary inspection and monitoring measures, ensuring that these are clearly communicated to the TWC and construction teams.
- Respond to design review comments and coordinate with appointed Design Checkers to ensure that all technical comments are satisfactorily addressed before designs are issued for construction.
- Review proposed modifications to temporary works designs, materials, and construction sequences, preparing revised calculations and coordinating the preparation of revised drawings, ensuring that the required design checking and approval processes are completed before implementation.
- Conduct site visits and technical inspections as required to verify that temporary works installations comply with approved designs, identify design-related issues, and provide engineering support to construction teams.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
- Proficiency in analysis and design software such as SAP2000, IDEA StatiCa, or equivalent engineering software, with working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications.
- Minimum 7 years of relevant structural design experience, including at least 3 years in temporary works design.
- Proven experience in the design of temporary works for major infrastructure projects involving roads, bridges, underpasses, tunnels, or major concrete structures.
- Strong technical knowledge of temporary works systems, including formwork, falsework, scaffolding, excavation support, structural shoring and propping, working platforms, and temporary structural supports.
- Strong knowledge of structural analysis, stability assessment, construction-stage engineering, and temporary works design principles.
- Working knowledge of BS 5975, applicable Saudi Building Codes, Eurocodes, AISC, ACI, and other relevant structural design standards.
- Experience in preparing and reviewing structural calculations, coordinating the preparation of engineering drawings, and preparing design reports and design check documentation.
- Strong technical problem-solving, communication, and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively with construction teams, designers, subcontractors, and consultants.
