Overview
A client of Insight Global is looking for a Application Systems Engineer to join an existing cloud transformation team and work directly with a senior engineer to analyse legacy enterprise applications, document system architecture, and prepare workloads for migration to Azure. The primary responsibility is reverse engineering applications that have little to no existing documentation.
Key Responsibilities
• Reverse engineer complex enterprise applications and supporting infrastructure
• Analyse Windows-based environments to determine how applications are installed, configured, and used
• Document application architecture, dependencies, integrations, and communication patterns
• Identify network communications, protocols, ports, IP addresses, and system dependencies
• Create technical design and architecture documentation required for cloud migration planning
• Work closely with senior engineering resources to support ongoing cloud transformation initiatives
• Troubleshoot application connectivity and dependency issues discovered during analysis
• Support migration and cutover activities when needed, particularly when issues arise during transition
Required Technical Skills
• Strong Windows Server and Windows Operating System expertise
• Active Directory administration and troubleshooting experience
• Strong networking knowledge including TCP/IP, ports, protocols, and application communications
• SQL Server and database familiarity
• Experience analysing enterprise applications and multi-tier systems
• Ability to understand application dependencies and infrastructure relationships
• Experience creating technical architecture and design documentation
Preferred Skills
• Experience with Azure cloud migrations
• Experience using packet capture tools such as Wireshark
• Familiarity with legacy enterprise platforms and applications
• Exposure to AS400 environments
• Additional language skills such as Italian or German
Ideal Candidate Background
Experience with specific applications is less important than the ability to quickly dissect and understand unfamiliar systems. The ideal candidate has previously worked within large enterprise environments and understands how complex applications operate across multiple servers, databases, and infrastructure layers.
