Role Description
The Ship Electrical Engineer is responsible for the installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems and equipment onboard vessels. The role ensures that all electrical systems operate safely, reliably, and efficiently in accordance with marine industry standards, technical specifications, and applicable safety regulations.
The successful candidate will work closely with project engineers, shipyard personnel, vessel crews, suppliers, and subcontractors to support vessel maintenance, repair, upgrading, and new installation projects.
Key Responsibilities
- * Perform installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of shipboard electrical systems and equipment.
- Maintain and troubleshoot electrical power distribution systems, generators, motors, switchboards, transformers, and control panels.
- Inspect and test electrical wiring, cables, lighting systems, batteries, and electrical protection devices.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, circuit diagrams, and technical specifications.
- Conduct electrical testing, fault diagnosis, commissioning, and functional testing of ship electrical systems.
- Coordinate electrical installation, repair, and maintenance activities with project teams, shipyard personnel, vessel crews, and subcontractors.
- Ensure all electrical work complies with relevant marine standards, classification society requirements, and applicable safety regulations.
- Prepare technical reports, inspection records, maintenance logs, test reports, and other project documentation.
- Identify electrical faults and recommend effective corrective and preventive maintenance solutions.
- Monitor project progress, material requirements, tools, and equipment to ensure work is completed safely and on schedule.
- Support vessel electrical upgrading, retrofitting, refurbishment, and newbuilding projects, where applicable.
- Ensure compliance with workplace safety procedures and electrical isolation requirements when performing maintenance and repair work.
- Liaise with suppliers and service providers regarding electrical components, spare parts, and technical issues.
- Perform other engineering and maintenance duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
- * Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Marine Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Previous experience in ship electrical systems, marine equipment, shipyard operations, or vessel maintenance is an advantage.
- Knowledge of marine electrical power distribution, generators, motors, switchboards, control systems, and electrical protection systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.
- Familiarity with electrical testing instruments and troubleshooting techniques.
- Understanding of marine electrical standards, classification society requirements, and electrical safety practices.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office; knowledge of electrical design or engineering software is an advantage.
- Strong technical, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to travel to shipyards, vessels, ports, or offshore project sites when required.
- Responsible, detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
