Africell, the pan-African mobile telecommunications company, is recruiting a Senior Data Engineer, to be based in Connect Hub, Lebanon.
Role responsibilities:
The Senior Data Engineer will design, build, and operate scalable and reliable data platforms, pipelines, and integration services across Africell Group. The role will implement the data architecture and standards defined by the Data Manager and provide trusted data for reporting, analytics, AI, and business applications. The position requires strong hands-on engineering capability, ownership of production data pipelines, and close collaboration with analysts, AI engineers, data scientists, and application teams.
Role Outputs
- Design and implement scalable batch, near-real-time, and real-time ETL/ELT pipelines across Telecom, Mobile Money, CRM, Digital, Network, Finance, and external systems.
- Contribute to and implement the target data and AI architecture, standards, and roadmap defined by the Data Manager.
- Integrate data from databases, APIs, files, event streams, and documents, including incremental loads, change data capture, schema evolution, retries, and recovery mechanisms.
- Design and build data lakes/lakehouses, data warehouses, data marts, Customer Data Platform components, and reusable data services.
- Develop consolidated Customer 360 datasets and trusted data products for CVM, analytics, AI, digital applications, and operational use cases.
- Design and maintain data models, source mappings, metadata, lineage, business definitions, and technical documentation.
- Implement data governance, quality, security, privacy, access-control, retention, and master/reference-data standards established by the Data Manager.
- Develop automated data-quality controls and monitor accuracy, completeness, freshness, pipeline failures, reconciliation exceptions, and data-platform reliability.
- Ensure scalability, availability, performance, and cost efficiency of data pipelines, storage, queries, transformations, and processing workloads.
- Build reusable connectors, APIs, automation components, and governed data services for applications, analytics, AI systems, and external integrations.
- Work with analysts, AI engineers, and data scientists to develop curated datasets and feature pipelines for model training, evaluation, inference, and production use.
- Build and maintain data pipelines supporting AI/ML and Generative AI applications, including RAG document ingestion, extraction, metadata, embeddings, vector indexing, refresh, and deletion.
- Provide secure and governed access to enterprise data for AI applications and agents, ensuring source permissions, sensitive-data controls, lineage, and traceability.
- Apply DataOps and MLOps practices covering version control, automated testing, CI/CD, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, review technical designs and code, contribute to technology evaluations, and promote common engineering standards across Africell Group.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field;
You will work with the Africell’s teams to achieve the contribution to Africell’s mission of bringing affordable, fast, and secure mobile connectivity to millions of customers across Africa.
The ideal applicant will also have at least 6+ years’ experience in:
- Data engineering, data integration, data platforms, or related areas, including hands-on delivery of production data pipelines and platforms.
- Strong practical skills in SQL and Python for integration, transformation, automation, performance optimization, and troubleshooting.
- Strong experience designing and operating data warehouses, data lakes, or lakehouses, including dimensional modeling, partitioning, and modern storage formats.
- Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow and streaming/event technologies such as Kafka or equivalent platforms.
- Experience implementing CDC, incremental processing, schema evolution, deduplication, retries, replay, and recovery mechanisms.
- Practical experience with data quality, metadata, lineage, governance, security, and access controls.
- Experience with Git, CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, observability, and production support.
- Exposure to AI/ML data pipelines, feature engineering, MLOps, RAG, vector databases/search, and governed data access for AI applications is highly desirable.
- Experience in Telecom, Mobile Money, Fintech, Banking, or another high-volume transactional-data environment is an advantage.
