As part of our ongoing expansion and growing business activities, OTAK is seeking to hire a Senior Technical Office Engineer - Solar Energy ,to join our team and contribute to the successful delivery of our upcoming projects.
Job Purpose
The Senior Technical Office Engineer – Solar is responsible for providing engineering and technical support throughout the full lifecycle of Solar PV projects, from tendering and system design through procurement, project execution, testing, commissioning, and handover.
The role has a strong focus on developing and optimizing technical solutions for mega-scale Solar PV projects, utility-scale and large C&I applications, off-grid Solar systems integrated with Energy Storage Systems (ESS/BESS), and Solar Pumping Systems.
The position is responsible for preparing and reviewing engineering designs, calculations, BOQs, technical proposals, submittals, and equipment selections while coordinating with internal teams, clients, consultants, suppliers, and contractors to ensure technically compliant, reliable, and cost-effective Solar solutions.
Key Accountabilities
1. Solar PV Design & Engineering
- Review tender documents, project specifications, drawings, BOQs, and client technical requirements.
- Prepare and review Solar PV system designs and detailed engineering calculations.
- Perform PV system sizing and optimize system configurations based on project requirements and operating conditions.
- Prepare and review PV array layouts and Single Line Diagrams (SLDs).
- Perform DC/AC sizing, cable sizing, voltage-drop calculations, protection coordination, and related electrical calculations.
- Support the technical selection and sizing of PV modules, inverters, mounting systems, cables, protection devices, transformers, and other Balance of System (BOS) components.
- Conduct energy yield analysis and evaluate system performance using PVsyst and other relevant engineering tools.
- Develop value-engineered technical solutions to optimize system performance, reliability, and project cost.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, utility requirements, client requirements, and project specifications.
2. Mega-Scale & Utility-Scale Solar Projects
- Provide engineering support for mega-scale and utility-scale Solar PV projects, including large-capacity ground-mounted Solar installations.
- Support system architecture, equipment selection, electrical configuration, and technical optimization for large Solar PV plants.
- Review and coordinate major electrical interfaces including MV systems, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and grid interconnection requirements, as applicable.
- Evaluate technical alternatives and value-engineering opportunities for large-scale Solar projects.
- Support technical coordination with clients, consultants, EPC contractors, suppliers, and other project stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
3. Off-Grid Solar & Energy Storage Systems
- Design and technically evaluate off-grid and hybrid Solar PV systems integrated with Energy Storage Systems (ESS/BESS).
- Perform load analysis, PV sizing, battery storage sizing, inverter/PCS selection, and overall system configuration.
- Support technical selection and evaluation of batteries, Battery Management Systems (BMS), inverters/PCS, controllers, and related system components.
- Evaluate system autonomy, energy demand, charging/discharging requirements, and operational scenarios.
- Develop technically optimized solutions integrating Solar PV, Energy Storage, and other power sources where required.
- Support technical troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, and performance evaluation of off-grid and energy storage systems.
4. Solar Pumping Systems
- Design and technically evaluate Solar PV-powered pumping systems for relevant applications.
- Perform Solar PV sizing based on pump power requirements, operating hours, site conditions, and required water demand.
- Support technical selection of pumps, Solar Pump Inverters/VFDs, PV modules, cables, protection devices, and associated electrical components.
- Coordinate electrical and technical requirements with hydraulic and mechanical parameters provided for the pumping application.
- Evaluate and optimize Solar pumping system performance, reliability, and energy efficiency.
- Provide technical support during installation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of Solar pumping systems.
5. Tendering & Technical Proposals
- Review RFQs, RFPs, tender documents, specifications, and client requirements.
- Prepare technical proposals, compliance statements, technical clarifications, and tender documentation.
- Prepare and review BOQs and material requirements based on approved project designs.
- Provide accurate technical quantities and specifications to support project costing and commercial proposals.
- Develop technical solutions for mega-scale, grid-connected, off-grid, energy storage, and Solar pumping applications.
- Coordinate with Sales and Commercial teams during tendering and pre-award stages.
- Respond to technical queries and clarifications from clients and consultants.
6. Technical Submittals & Approvals
- Prepare and review technical and material submittals, datasheets, catalogues, compliance documentation, and engineering calculations.
- Prepare and review shop drawings and other project technical documentation.
- Follow up on technical submissions and approvals with clients and consultants.
- Address technical comments and revise documents and drawings as required.
- Maintain proper control of technical documents, revisions, approvals, and project records.
7. Procurement & Supplier Technical Support
- Prepare technical specifications and requirements for procurement activities.
- Review suppliers' and vendors' technical offers, datasheets, and proposed equipment.
- Conduct technical evaluations and comparisons of Solar PV, Energy Storage, and Solar Pumping equipment and materials.
- Ensure selected materials and equipment comply with approved specifications, system design requirements, and project requirements.
- Coordinate with Procurement regarding technical clarifications, vendor evaluations, and material approvals.
8. Project Execution & Technical Support
- Provide technical support to Project and Site teams throughout project execution.
- Resolve design and technical issues arising during construction and installation.
- Participate in site visits, technical coordination meetings, and engineering discussions as required.
- Ensure consistency between approved designs, technical submittals, and actual site execution.
- Review and support preparation of as-built drawings and final project documentation.
- Provide technical support during testing, commissioning, performance verification, and project handover.
- Support troubleshooting and technical problem-solving for Solar PV, Energy Storage, and Solar Pumping Systems.
Required Skills & Technical Competencies
- Strong knowledge of Solar PV system design, sizing, engineering calculations, and system optimization.
- Strong technical understanding of mega-scale and utility-scale Solar PV systems.
- Good knowledge of Off-Grid and Hybrid Solar systems integrated with Energy Storage Systems (ESS/BESS), including battery sizing, system autonomy, BMS, and PCS/inverters.
- Good technical understanding of Solar Pumping Systems, including PV sizing, pump requirements, VFDs/pump inverters, and system integration.
- Strong capability in preparing and reviewing BOQs, technical specifications, technical proposals, shop drawings, and technical submittals.
- Strong capability in the technical evaluation and selection of PV modules, inverters, mounting systems, ESS/BESS, cables, protection devices, transformers, MV equipment, and related system components.
- Good knowledge of applicable Solar PV, electrical, and Energy Storage codes and standards.
- Strong analytical, technical problem-solving, and value-engineering capabilities.
- Strong coordination, communication, and technical documentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Very good command of English, both written and spoken.
- Proficiency in PVsyst and AutoCAD; knowledge of other relevant Solar and electrical engineering software is an advantage.
Required Education
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
Minimum Required Experience
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in Solar PV Engineering, Design, Technical Office, and/or EPC projects.
- Proven hands-on experience in mega-scale and utility-scale Solar PV projects is highly preferred.
- Practical experience in Off-Grid Solar PV and Energy Storage Systems (ESS/BESS) is highly preferred.
- Experience in Solar Pumping Systems is highly preferred.
- Hands-on experience supporting Solar projects across multiple stages of the project lifecycle, including tendering, design, procurement, execution, testing, commissioning, and handover.
- Previous experience working with clients, consultants, EPC contractors, suppliers, and multidisciplinary project teams.
