AI Lead - Stockholm (Hybrid)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced AI Leader to join a fast-growing technology company at the forefront of digital commerce. Supporting tens of thousands of merchants globally, the business is investing heavily in AI and is looking for someone to define and drive its AI strategy, architecture, and platform capabilities.
This is a highly influential position combining hands-on engineering with strategic leadership. You'll work across Product, Engineering, Data, Security, and Executive teams to identify where AI can create genuine commercial value and build the foundations required to scale it across the organisation.
The Role
As AI Lead, you will own the company's AI product and architecture strategy. You will be responsible for evaluating emerging technologies, designing scalable AI platforms, and enabling engineering teams to deliver AI-powered products safely and effectively.
This is a deeply technical role where you'll write production code, build prototypes, assess new AI models, and shape the long-term technology vision.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and deliver the organisation's AI architecture and platform strategy
- Design solutions around model routing, agentic systems, AI tooling, and developer platforms
- Evaluate build-versus-buy decisions across AI technologies and partnerships
- Create an AI-ready data foundation, including semantic search, embeddings, indexing, and context management
- Partner with Product and Engineering teams to identify and deliver high-impact AI initiatives
- Continuously assess new developments across foundation models, multimodal AI, agent frameworks, MCP, knowledge graphs, and AI infrastructure
- Establish reusable standards, frameworks, and best practices that can be adopted across engineering teams
Required Experience
- 7+ years of experience within Software Engineering, AI Engineering, or related fields
- Strong backend engineering background
- Experience building scalable distributed systems
- Exposure to cloud-based environments
- Knowledge of data engineering concepts and platforms
- Passion for emerging AI technologies and practical applications of AI
Desired Technical Expertise
Experience with several of the following:
- OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or other large language models
- Vector databases
- Elasticsearch
- Kubernetes
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
- AI agents and agentic workflows
- Model Context Protocol (MCP)
- Context engineering
- Knowledge Graphs and GraphRAG
- Event-driven architectures
- Developer tooling and CLI development
