Birch Agency is seeking a dedicated Exceptional Children (EC) Teacher to lead a Sustained Support classroom serving students with significant academic, behavioral, and support needs.
Unlike an adapted curriculum classroom, students in this setting will follow the standard course of study and participate in the state testing program. Students may eventually pursue an Occupational Course of Study (OCS) pathway in high school or potentially work toward a Future Ready diploma.
This is an excellent opportunity for an educator who is comfortable supporting students with significant behavioral and developmental needs while providing instruction aligned with the standard curriculum.
Student Population
The classroom is expected to serve approximately 7–8 students, with the caseload not exceeding 12 students.
Students will range from approximately early elementary through middle school, so this may not be a traditional single-grade classroom.
Students May
- Have relatively high support needs.
- Follow the standard course of study rather than an adapted curriculum.
- Participate in the state testing program.
- Have significant behavioral and support needs.
- Potentially pursue an OCS pathway in high school.
- Potentially work toward a Future Ready diploma.
Classroom Support

The Classroom Will Have
- * 1 EC Teacher
- 1 Teacher Assistant (TA)
- 1 Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)
This means three adults will be supporting the students, providing additional assistance with instruction, classroom management, behavioral support, and student needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Sustained Support classroom.
- Provide instruction aligned with the standard course of study.
- Develop and implement differentiated instruction based on individual student needs and IEP goals.
- Manage student IEPs and case management responsibilities.
- Monitor student progress and maintain accurate documentation and progress reports.
- Prepare students to participate in state assessments as appropriate.
- Implement proactive and positive behavior support strategies.
- Address significant behavioral and support needs while maintaining a structured and supportive classroom environment.
- Collaborate closely with the TA and RBT to provide consistent academic and behavioral support.
- Participate in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings, professional development, and other school activities.
- Collaborate with families, administrators, general education teachers, and related service providers.
- Support students in developing academic, behavioral, social, and functional skills.
- Help students work toward greater independence and long-term educational and career goals.
Qualifications
- * Appropriate North Carolina Exceptional Children/Special Education teaching licensure or eligibility to obtain licensure.
- Experience working with students with significant behavioral or support needs preferred.
- Experience with standard-course-of-study instruction and differentiated instruction preferred.
- Experience in a sustained support, resource, self-contained, or similar special education setting is a plus.
- Strong classroom management and behavior support skills.
- Ability to manage IEPs and case management responsibilities.
- Strong communication, organization, collaboration, and documentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
