As we continue to expand, we are seeking a highly skilled, detail-oriented, and motivated Principal Hardware Product Development Engineer / Head of Mechatronics to join our team.
Role Summary
Lead the end-to-end development of complex civilian hardware products and automated equipment—from requirements and initial concept through mechanical design, electronics integration, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and production release.
We require a practical engineering leader who can personally design, build, troubleshoot, and improve physical products while coordinating specialist engineers, fabrication workshops, and component suppliers.
Required Skill Set
Proven ability to convert a product idea into technical requirements, system architecture, detailed designs, and a working product.
Experience balancing performance, manufacturing cost, reliability, serviceability, and development time.
Strong understanding of interfaces between mechanical assemblies, electronics, embedded software, and control systems.
Expert proficiency in SolidWorks, Creo, Siemens NX, CATIA, or equivalent.
Experience designing equipment bodies, chassis, enclosures, mechanisms, precision assemblies, and internal component layouts.
Strong knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, material selection, fastening, sealing, and thermal expansion.
Ability to perform and interpret structural, thermal, and vibration analysis and validate findings through testing.
Hands-on experience with CNC machining, CAM programming, G-code, tooling, fixtures, and machining strategies.
Working knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, welding, casting, injection molding, surface finishing, and 3D printing.
Ability to select manufacturing processes appropriate to prototype quantities and commercial production.
Strong design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly capability.
Experience integrating motors, actuators, motion mechanisms, sensors, encoders, and industrial controllers.
Understanding of motion control, calibration, positioning accuracy, and equipment safety.
Practical experience commissioning and troubleshooting automated electromechanical equipment.
Ability to specify and integrate embedded computing boards, microcontrollers, power supplies, drivers, and communication interfaces.
Ability to read electronic schematics, review PCB integration requirements, and diagnose hardware faults.
Practical familiarity with embedded programming, firmware debugging, and hardware–software integration.
Understanding of grounding, shielding, electrical protection, electromagnetic compatibility, and heat management.
Ability to determine when custom electronics are necessary and manage specialist development.
Demonstrated workshop experience assembling, wiring, testing, and refining functional prototypes.
Proficiency with relevant measurement and diagnostic equipment.
Ability to establish measurable acceptance criteria and investigate failures systematically.
Experience with environmental, endurance, functional, and reliability testing.
Experience releasing complete manufacturing packages and supporting pilot production.
Strong supplier evaluation, technical procurement, cost estimation, and quality management skills.
Ability to lead multidisciplinary engineers and technicians while retaining hands-on technical responsibility.
Roles and Responsibilities
Own the product development lifecycle: Lead products from requirements definition and feasibility assessment through prototype development, validation, and manufacturing release.
Define the engineering architecture: Establish subsystem boundaries, component interfaces, performance requirements, and verification methods.
Design mechanical assemblies: Develop 3D models, equipment bodies, enclosures, mechanisms, detailed drawings, and assembly specifications.
Select components and materials: Evaluate alternatives based on technical suitability, availability, lifecycle, cost, and ease of maintenance.
Lead electronics and firmware integration: Coordinate specialist engineers and ensure that computing, control, power, and communication components work together reliably.
Build and refine prototypes: Supervise and personally participate in fabrication, assembly, commissioning, troubleshooting, and design improvement.
Prepare for manufacturing: Develop production drawings, bills of materials, CNC/CAM deliverables where applicable, assembly instructions, fixtures, and inspection plans.
Manage external manufacturing: Qualify workshops and suppliers, review samples, resolve fabrication issues, and verify delivered components against specifications.
Validate product performance: Plan and execute testing, document results, resolve defects, and confirm readiness against agreed acceptance criteria.
Improve cost and reliability: Simplify assemblies, reduce unnecessary parts, improve service access, and address recurring failures.
Control engineering changes: Maintain revision-controlled drawings, bills of materials, firmware compatibility records, and approved design changes.
Support production and field operations: Resolve pilot-production and deployment issues and incorporate feedback into subsequent product revisions.
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
At least 10 years of relevant experience, including substantial ownership of complete hardware product development.
Demonstrated delivery of multiple functioning products, with evidence of manufacturing or operational deployment.
Experience limited to drafting, maintenance, procurement, or production supervision alone is insufficient.
Strong technical English and clear communication with engineering teams and suppliers.
Mandatory CV Appendix: Hardware Design Project Portfolio
Applicants must attach a detailed project portfolio at the end of their CV or as a referenced appendix. Include at least three substantial projects, preferably including one that reached repeatable production.
For each project, provide:
Product purpose, development dates, and final development stage.
Exact personal design responsibilities and decisions.
Team composition and work completed by other specialists.
Mechanical, electronics, embedded software, and manufacturing scope.
CAD/CAM tools, materials, components, and fabrication processes used.
Photographs, CAD views, sample drawings, assembly evidence, and demonstration links where permitted.
Main technical problems encountered and how they were resolved.
Testing performed and measurable results.
Production quantities, approximate cost ranges, or cost improvements where disclosure is permitted.
Redacted or anonymized evidence is acceptable for confidential work.
