The Specialist Pediatrics is responsible for providing comprehensive medical care to infants, children, and adolescents across the Pediatric Inpatient Unit, general wards, and Emergency Department (ER).
The role includes assessment, diagnosis, treatment, stabilization, admission and ongoing management of pediatric patients, while ensuring safe, evidence-based and patient- and family-centered care in accordance with MMCH policies and Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) / Department of Healthcare Professions (DHP) standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, diagnose and manage acute and general pediatric conditions presenting to the Emergency Department.
- Provide initial stabilization and emergency management of acutely or seriously ill pediatric patients and coordinate escalation or transfer when higher-level or subspecialty care is required.
- Determine appropriate patient disposition from the ER, including discharge, observation, hospital admission or referral.
- Manage pediatric patients admitted to the inpatient pediatric wards, including daily clinical assessment, treatment planning and follow-up.
- Conduct regular ward rounds and review patients' clinical progress, investigations, medications and treatment plans.
- Manage common pediatric medical conditions including respiratory, gastrointestinal, infectious, neurological, allergic and other acute and chronic childhood illnesses within the physician's scope of practice.
- Recognize clinical deterioration promptly and initiate appropriate emergency management and escalation of care.
- Request and interpret appropriate laboratory, radiological and other diagnostic investigations.
- Prescribe medications and treatments safely and appropriately according to pediatric dosing standards and hospital policies.
- Provide discharge planning, follow-up recommendations and clear instructions to parents or caregivers.
- Participate in pediatric on-call, evening, weekend and public-holiday coverage according to departmental requirements and approved duty rosters.
- Collaborate closely with Emergency Medicine, Neonatology, other pediatric specialties, Nursing, Pharmacy, Radiology, Laboratory and other clinical departments.
- Communicate effectively with children and their families and provide appropriate counseling and education regarding diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.
- Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation in accordance with MMCH standards.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality-improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, departmental meetings and continuing medical education.
- Support junior physicians and other members of the multidisciplinary team as required.
- Follow all MMCH policies relating to patient safety, infection prevention, medication safety, clinical governance and confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- Recognized medical degree (MBBS, MD or equivalent).
- Recognized postgraduate specialty qualification / Board Certification in Pediatrics.
- Meets the eligibility requirements for licensing as a Specialist in Pediatrics with Qatar MoPH – Department of Healthcare Professions (DHP).
- Required post-specialization clinical experience in Pediatrics in accordance with DHP licensing requirements.
- Demonstrated recent experience managing general pediatric inpatient and emergency cases.
- Current BLS certification required; PALS/APLS or equivalent pediatric emergency certification strongly preferred.
- Good command of written and spoken English; Arabic is an advantage.
Required Competencies
Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills in general and acute Pediatrics, with demonstrated ability to recognize and stabilize pediatric emergencies. The physician should be comfortable working across inpatient wards and the Emergency Department, managing competing clinical priorities, communicating effectively with families, and working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary hospital environment.
