SummaryThe Lung Cancer Screening Program Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a position located in the Pulmonary Division of the Medicine Service. The NP reports directly to Section Chief of Pulmonology.
Duties
- (a) Participation in Role Orientation and Training provided by existing staff
- (b) Organize and lead In-services to share information about the Lung Cancer Screening with clinical staff
- This will include interfacing with providers at VA medical centers outside of Durham - and to specifically include Fayetteville VAMC
- (c) Interface with Primary Care Teams to identify activities to support recruitment to the project
- (d) Work with Ambulatory Care Staff and the local clinical application's coordinator to ensure that the clinical reminders and templates for the project are implemented appropriately
- (e) Educate Primary Care Staff on the specifics and goals of the program
- (f) Will be one of 2 Primary Points of Contact for the Durham VA Lung Cancer Screening program
- (g) Educate Staff and Patients regarding the Risks and Benefits of low dose Chest CT Screening for Lung Cancer
- (h) Once eligible patients are identified - the Coordinator will order the CT scan - follow up the results and notify the patient - and arrange appropriate follow-up studies/referrals
- (i) Provide Referrals to Smoking Cessation Programs
- (j) Monitor and assist with the follow-up of abnormal findings
- (k) Monitor adherence to the operational and clinical protocols established for the project
- (l) Identify protocol problems and assist in problem resolution efforts
- (m)Maintain records and lead the collection and submission of project data into an anticipated National Database
- (n) Participate in periodic national teleconferences
- (o) Provide regular communication and reports to the LSI
- (p) Collaborate with nursing staff assigned to the lung cancer screening program at Durham and Fayetteville VAs
- (q) Participate in the weekly Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Conference and assure timely follow-up on all recommendations for those patients presented
- (r) Collaborates with other disciplines (i.e. - Radiology - Pathology - Radiation Oncology - Hematology/ Oncology - Thoracic Surgery - and Primary Care) to ensure continuity of care
- (s) Keeps abreast of latest trends - sills - procedures - and protocols relevant in the area of specialty and serves as a resource person for the Medical Center Staff
- (t) Interact with research staff to assist with clinical trials related to lung cancer screening - and to identify appropriate patients for lung cancer treatment trials
