Job Purpose:The Heavy Equipment Drivetrain & Powertrain Specialist is responsible for the advanced diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair, and complete overhauling of complex transmissions, axles, differentials, final drives, and hub assemblies on heavy construction machinery. This role ensures efficient power transfer, mechanical integrity, and minimal machine downtime. While working across various heavy equipment brands, a strong specialization and technical familiarity with Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) transmissions (including drop boxes and wet-disc brake axles) is highly preferred. Additionally, the role requires integrated knowledge of electro-hydraulic shift controls to diagnose modern, powershift, and automatic transmissions
Duties and Responsibilities:
- * Diagnostic Troubleshooting: Perform advanced diagnostics on powershift transmissions, automatic gearboxes, and multi-axle drivelines to identify mechanical and electro-hydraulic engagement faults
- Component Overhauling : Disassemble, inspect, repair, rebuild, and reassemble heavy-duty drivetrain components including transmissions, torque converters, differentials, axles, final drives, and wheel hubs
- Schematic Interpretation: Read and interpret complex assembly drawings, planetary gear schematics, and electro-hydraulic transmission circuit diagrams
- System Integration: Diagnose and repair electronic shift control systems, including transmission control valves, solenoids, speed sensors, and wiring interfaces
- Preventative Maintenance: Execute scheduled transmission and axle fluid flushes, clutch pack pressure testing, and driveline backlash adjustments to ensure maximum reliability
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of all powertrain tolerances, shimming clearances, parts used, and repair times using the company's asset management software and write professional technical reports
Skills and Competencies:
- * Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of planetary gear sets, wet brake systems, differentials (locking and limited-slip), and torque converter principles
- Electro-Hydraulic Proficiency: Strong understanding of shift transmission hydraulics, proportional control solenoids, and electrical diagnostic tools
- Analytical Thinking: Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose noise, vibration, harshness (NVH) faults, and slippage across mechanical interfaces
- Precision Tools: Proficient in using specialized gear pullers, dial indicators (for backlash/endplay), pressure gauges, and electronic calibrators
- Safety & Compliance: Thorough understanding of heavy component lifting/rigging, workshop safety practices, and proper disposal of heavy gear oils and hazardous fluids
RequirementsQualifications & Experience:
- * Education: Diploma or technical certification in Mechanical Engineering or Automotive/Heavy Equipment Mechanics
- Experience: Minimum of five years of hands-on experience as a drivetrain or transmission technician working with heavy construction equipment (e.g., excavators, wheel loaders, articulated haulers)
- Brand Specialization: Proven track record working with Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) powertrains and transmission diagnostic platforms (e.g., Volvo Tech Tool) is strongly preferred
- Certifications: Certified Powertrain Technician or equivalent heavy equipment mechanical industry certification is highly advantageous
Physical Requirements:
- * Ability to work in restricted or awkward physical positions while tracing wiring behind panels or under cabs
- Capability to work in diverse environmental conditions, including both workshop settings and outdoor field locations
