MAX IV is looking for a beamline scientist at the state-of-the-art AC-SPELEEM beamline MAXPEEM to further develop the spectromicroscopy program, including advancing the instrumentation, growing user communities, and pursuing their own scientific research.
Your team
The MAXPEEM beamline is dedicated to spectromicroscopy with nanometer resolution on magnetic materials, semiconductor devices, metal alloys, heterogeneous catalysts, and other nanostructured surfaces using SPELEEM. The beamline provides variable-polarization VUV and soft X-ray light to the state-of-the-art Aberration-Corrected SPELEEΜ microscope. The team consists of six members - three scientists, two postdocs, and a technician, who are actively driving multiple research and development projects within magnetism, 2D materials, surface science, and industrial applications.
Would you like to work at one of the brightest lightsources in the world?
Your main work tasks will be
- Ensure the robust, optimal day-to-day operation of the beamline, including all instruments, software, and adjacent facilities, and prepare it for the planned user experiments.
- Provide support to the users during the setup and execution of beamline experiments.
- Organise the constant availability of technical infrastructure and work towards improvements for a user-friendly beamline.
- Contribute to the continuous development and implementation of methods and beamline instrumentation.
- Carry out procurements for developing and maintaining the technical infrastructure.
- Together with the beamline lead, perform proposal feasibility checks.
- Communicate with the beamline team members and other relevant staff at MAX IV and external partners.
- Communicate to the existing and potential new users the current capabilities and the upgrade plans of the beamline.
- Create and maintain beamline documentations.
- Have a solid knowledge of the general and organizational safety rules and requirements, and instruct users and team members.
- Pursue own research program in collaboration with users or members of team and acquire external funding.
- Play an active role in the development of the research portfolio of the beamline.
- Supervise temporary staff (PostDocs, PhD, and Master students).
To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications
- PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related area.
- Demonstrated experience in performing experiments, with soft x-ray synchrotron-based techniques within fields of magnetism, ferroelectricity, 2D materials, surface science, or related.
- A good track record of published articles in peer-reviewed journals highlighting findings from your research and experimental activities.
- Demonstrated experience in performing experiments with photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) or low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM).
- Experience in programming (e.g., Python, C++, Matlab, Igor Pro, or other) for data analysis.
- Experience in using and maintaining ultrahigh vacuum instrumentation.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Excellent command of the English language, good communication, and teamwork skills.
Below are seen as merits
- Hands-on experience with photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) or low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM).
- Experience in programming for automation or data acquisition.
- Experience in user support at synchrotrons.
