Head of Neural Software Engineering – Brain-Computer Interfaces
üìç Munich, Germany | Hybrid (3 days on-site, 2 days from home) | Permanent
Our client is a well-funded new venture within an established, fast-growing healthcare group with a strong track record of turning research into approved medical products. Their mission is to build the next generation of brain-computer interfaces, with the aim of restoring movement to people with paralysis, sight to the blind and a voice to those who can't speak.
They're now looking for a Head of Neural Software Engineering to own the software that turns brain signals into actions. It's the bridge between the implant and the patient. You'll shape the full software architecture from an early stage and build the team around it.
What you'll be doing
- Building and leading a high-performing neural software team
- Developing software for real-time acquisition, pre-processing and decoding of neural signals, as well as targeted stimulation via the implant
- Designing and optimising decoding algorithms and signal processing pipelines that work in both directions between brain and device, under strict latency and reliability requirements
- Owning the BCI software architecture end to end, from the implant-facing firmware interface through middleware to the application layer
- Working closely with the chip and electrode hardware teams and with clinical partners to make the software work for real patients
What you'll bring
- Strong foundations in software development and system architecture, with a solid grasp of real-time requirements, latency and resource constraints
- Proficiency in at least one system-level language (C, C++ or Rust) and in Python
- Digital signal processing knowledge, ideally with experience of neural or physiological data (e.g. electrophysiology, EEG, EMG, ECG)
- Experience with embedded software, firmware or development in regulated environments is a plus
- Experience leading or mentoring engineers, or the ambition and confidence to step up and build a team
- A degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Physics or a related field
- A background in fast-paced, high-performance environments such as startups, research labs or high-growth tech
- Fluent English (German is a bonus but not essential)
Why join?
- Build a technology that could genuinely change patients' lives
- Responsibility from day one, with short decision-making paths and a young, driven team
- Work alongside a top-level management board of successful entrepreneurs, former consultants and experienced industry leaders
- The backing of an established, well-resourced group
- Hybrid working from a site just outside Munich, with relocation support available
If you've built real-time signal processing or embedded software and want to lead something truly pioneering, apply now or message me directly for a confidential conversation.
