If the combination between high performance and people centricity excites you, Bluebird might be the company for you.
Why this role exists
Bluebird is growing 50% year on year. We now have people in the Netherlands, the UK, France, Germany, Finland, Sweden and Korea, on a mix of local contracts, EORs and contractor agreements.
Until now the senior leadership team ran people operations on the side. That worked at 20 people. It does not work at the size we are heading towards.
We are looking for our first Head of People. Someone who sits at the leadership table and shapes how Bluebird grows as a company, and who at the same time makes sure every contract in every country is correct, on time and compliant. Both halves matter equally.
About Bluebird
Bluebird is the search firm for GTM and Tech hires at VC-backed SaaS and AI companies. We started in January 2020 with ex-SaaS operators doing recruitment for SaaS companies, and that is still the model. Offices in Amsterdam and Sydney, with a potential office opening up in Berlin.
Around 30% of our clients come through venture capital partnerships (e.g. Frontline, Notion Capital, etc).
Bluebird is known for an incredible culture centered around People with Authenticity, Growth and Excellence as core values. Our investment into people's personal development is core to what makes people stay.
The role
Head of People, reporting to the CEO, part of the leadership team from day one.
This is a strategic role. You will co-own org design, leadership development and the culture we are building across our offices and seven countries. When we open the next country or bring in the next senior hire, you are in the lead.
It is also a hands-on role. Seven countries means seven sets of employment rules, plus EOR providers and contractor agreements on top. You will personally make sure that setup is airtight. If a contract in Finland or Korea is one clause off, you are the person who catches it before anyone else does.
And it is a people role in the most literal sense. Our consultants are the product. You coach managers, you develop consultants, you are the person people go to when things are hard. Extraordinary with people is the bar, not a nice-to-have.
What you will own
Strategy and structure
- Org design and role framework as we scale from ~30 to 60+ people
- Turning our core values into hiring criteria, review criteria and daily behaviours
- People data: headcount, attrition, tenure, and comp equity
International employment and compliance
- Employment contracts, amendments and templates for the Netherlands, UK, France, Germany, Finland, Sweden and Korea
- Managing our EOR providers (e.g. Deel) and contractor agreements, and deciding when an EOR setup should become a local entity
- Payroll coordination, benefits, pensions, leave and statutory obligations per country
- Visa, sponsorship and relocation cases (we have one live right now: a consultant moving from Sydney to the Netherlands)
- Selecting and running an HRIS that works across all of the above
People, coaching and development
- Onboarding: a consistent 30/60/90 programme for every consultant and staff member, regardless of country
- Running the performance and review cycle, and coaching managers on feedback and difficult conversations
- One-on-one coaching of consultants
- Learning and development budget and programme
- Engagement, retention and exit interviews, and acting on what comes back
Who you are
- 5+ years in People or HR, with at least one stretch as the first or most senior people person in a company of 30 to 150 FTE
- You have run employment across multiple countries, including EORs and contractors, and you have opinions on when each setup is right
- Strong on the legal and operational side: contracts, payroll, compliance. You enjoy making it tidy and you notice the detail others miss
- A natural coach. People come to you, and they leave the conversation clearer than they went in
- Commercial. You understand how a recruitment or professional services business makes money, and you build people processes that fit that reality
- Direct, low ego, comfortable telling founders no
- Fluent in English. Dutch is a major plus, French or German a bonus
- Based in or near Amsterdam, hybrid
What this role is not: a recruiter moving into HR (we have the hiring muscle already), or a people leader who needs a team of five to get things done.
What we offer
- Be part of an incredible company from a growth, culture and personal development perespective
- A seat at the leadership table in a company growing 50% year on year
- Competitive base salary (range to confirm)
- The founders' full backing to build the people function from the ground up, the way you think it should be built
- Hybrid working, and a company where family and health come first in practice, not only on paper
