Position Summary
The Chief Accountant is responsible for overseeing daily accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial records, timely reporting, compliance with company policies and applicable regulations, and strong financial controls. The role supports operational and project activities within an oil and gas environment through effective cost monitoring, financial analysis, budgeting support, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise the accounting team and ensure accurate, timely completion of daily accounting activities.
- Manage general ledger entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, payroll support, fixed assets, and expense reporting.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Ensure timely month-end and year-end closing in accordance with company deadlines and reporting requirements.
- Monitor project, operational, and departmental costs; identify variances and support cost-control measures.
- Support preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, cash-flow plans, and financial performance analysis.
- Review and verify supplier invoices, payment requests, purchase orders, expense claims, and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate with procurement and operations teams to ensure correct financial coding, budget availability, and proper approval processes.
- Maintain accurate accounting records for oil and gas operations, projects, equipment, inventory, services, and vendor contracts.
- Ensure compliance with applicable tax laws, statutory requirements, company policies, and financial-control procedures.
- Prepare tax returns, supporting schedules, and required documentation in coordination with external advisers where necessary.
- Coordinate internal and external audits and provide accurate schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documents.
- Maintain and improve accounting procedures, controls, filing systems, and financial reporting processes.
- Support implementation and effective use of ERP/accounting systems.
Provide financial guidance and reporting support to management, project teams, and other departments.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Professional certification such as CPA, ACCA, CMA, CA, or equivalent is preferred.
- Minimum 7 years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a senior or supervisory accounting role.
- Experience in oil and gas, energy, engineering, construction, or project-based industries is strongly preferred.
- Strong practical knowledge of general accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow, taxation, and audit processes.
- Knowledge of IFRS and local statutory reporting requirements.
- Experience with ERP or accounting systems; advanced Microsoft Excel skills are required.
· Hands-on experience with SAGE 300 ERP is required.
- Experience handling project accounting, cost allocation, inventory, fixed assets, and vendor payments is an advantage.
- Fluent English is required; Kurdish and/or Arabic language skills are an advantage.
