Role OverviewThe Compute Manager leads and develops a team of compute engineers responsible for enterprise virtualization, hypervisor management, compute resource optimization, and infrastructure resilience. This role combines deep technical expertise with team leadership, requiring hands-on involvement in critical initiatives while building team capability and driving operational excellence across global sites. The manager is expected to remain technically current, contribute directly to high-impact projects, and mentor engineers toward senior-level skills and responsibilities.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeam Leadership & Development
- * Hire, onboard, and develop compute engineers to level 2 and 3 capabilities
- Conduct regular 1:1s and provide coaching, feedback, and career development guidance
- Establish clear performance expectations and accountability; conduct fair, documented performance reviews
- Build a culture of engineering excellence, automation, and continuous improvement
- Ensure team members have the context, training, and tools needed to succeed independently
- Represent the team in organizational planning and resource discussions
Compute Operations & Infrastructure
- * Oversee VMware vSphere/vSAN environments
- Lead compute resource planning, capacity management, and performance optimization
- Own the health, reliability, and compliance of compute infrastructure across data center and cloud hosting platforms
- Manage patch cycles, firmware updates, and hardware replacements with zero unplanned downtime
- Implement and maintain monitoring/observability (CheckMK, RCA automation) across the global compute estate
- Design and implement disaster recovery and business continuity strategies for compute workloads
Strategic Projects & Migrations
- * Own compute design architecture
- Champion infrastructure modernization initiatives (e.g., consolidation, standardization,
automation)
- Coordinate with storage, network, security, and cloud teams to ensure compute integrates into broader infrastructure strategy
- Balance ongoing operations with multi-quarter strategic initiatives without team burnout
Technical Depth & Hands-On Leadership
- * Remain technically current in virtualization, compute architecture, and cloud
integration
- Contribute directly to complex technical problems, architecture decisions, and
infrastructure design
- Participate in incidents, escalations, and root cause analysis; drive prevention and learning
- Document technical decisions, design patterns, and runbooks; set standards for architecture and operations
- Stay current on vendor roadmaps (VMware, Nutanix, AWS, storage, networking)
- Drive automation and tooling to reduce manual toil
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- * Partner with Storage (VSAN, NetApp, backup), Network, Identity/Security, and Database teams to optimize system integration
- Engage with business stakeholders and product teams on compute requirements and trade-offs
- Coordinate with the data center team and external vendors (AWS, Broadcom, Nutanix)
- Communicate status, risks, and decisions up to leadership; escalate blockers early Compliance, Security & Cost Management
- Ensure compute infrastructure meets security standards (encryption, access control, audit logging)
- Maintain compliance with SOC 2, CMMC, and other relevant frameworks
- Monitor and optimize compute costs; negotiate vendor contracts and licensing
- Implement security patches and vulnerability remediations on schedule
- Lead security reviews and assessments of new infrastructure designs
Required Qualifications
- * 5+ years of hands-on experience managing compute infrastructure (VMware vSphere, hypervisors, or equivalent)
- 3+ years in a management or lead role with direct responsibility for engineering or technical teams
- Deep technical knowledge of virtualization architecture, resource scheduling, and performance optimization
- Experience planning and executing large-scale infrastructure migrations or
modernization projects
- Strong understanding of storage (SAN, NAS, vSAN), networking, and cloud integration (AWS, Azure)
- Experience with infrastructure monitoring, automation tools, and scripting (Ansible, PowerShell, Python)
- Proven ability to balance hands-on technical work with team leadership and strategic planning
- Excellent communication skills; ability to present technical decisions and trade-offs to leadership and non-technical stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to hire, mentor, and develop engineering talent
- Experience in a global organization supporting multiple time zones and geographic sites
Preferred Qualifications
- * Hands-on AWS experience, including landing zones, hybrid networking, and cost optimization
- Experience with data center migration or consolidation projects
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and configuration management
- Background in IT operations leadership within aviation, aerospace, or transportation
- Experience managing compliance initiatives (SOC 2, CMMC, ISO 27001)
- VMware certification (VCP, VCIX) or equivalent cloud/infrastructure certification

Work Environment & ExpectationsThis role supports a global compute environment across multiple time zones. The manager is expected to be available during critical incidents and on-call escalations. During major migration phases (B55, AWS EVS), extended hours and weekend availability may be required. The role includes travel to data centers (Denver, Frankfurt, Gothenburg) for critical activities and team engagement. Remote work is supported within the context of supporting global operations
