Team Leader, Material & Corrosion
Job Purpose:
Provides robust & Optimal technical support, on qualitative, quantitative or semi-quantitative Risk Based Inspection (RBI) technical analysis for the corrosion circuit at OQ8 under Team Leader Material and corrosion scope’s, acting as team player and focal point for RBI methodology & standards (heat exchangers, piping, etc.) through:
(1) Prioritize, coordinate and optimize inspection plans to assess the risk of failure in relation to a level of acceptance
(2) Develop and supervise the HSE and business risk of ‘active’ and ‘potential’ Damage Mechanisms
(3) Lead and oversee the Risk Based Inspection process by identifying corrosion loops and degradation mechanisms and provide the Material & Corrosion input to the RBI analyst as and when required.
(4) Guide young staff in related matters.; to assess the risk level for the Corrosion circuit (where each circuit can be compared for relative risk levels to aid in inspection and maintenance planning) and mitigate risks as appropriate.
The position will act in accordance with OQ8, Vision, Values & Strategies, as well as, policies, guidelines and standards, supported by an IT Technology platform, HSE standards, Omani’s government and other legal justifications, and best international practices in consonance with national objectives.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities:
1. Corrosion Management & Strategy.
- Lead comprehensive corrosion assessments across refinery process units (crude, vacuum, hydro processing, utilities, offsites).
- Develop, maintain, and update Corrosion Control Documents (CCDs), corrosion loops/circuits, and materials selection guidelines.
- Identify and evaluate damage mechanisms per API RP 571, recommending proactive mitigation strategies (e.g., inhibitors, coatings, cathodic protection, alloy upgrades).
- Oversee corrosion monitoring programs (coupons, probes, non-intrusive techniques).
- Investigate corrosion-related incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement preventive actions.
- Provide technical guidance on chemical treatment programs, inhibitor optimization, and process chemistry impacts.
2. Risk‑Based Inspection (RBI) Leadership.
- Direct and maintain the refinery’s RBI program in full compliance with API RP 580/581.
- Lead RBI studies, validate data, and review Probability of Failure (PoF) and Consequence of Failure (CoF) models.
- Translate RBI outputs into optimized inspection plans, evergreening schedules, and risk-ranked priorities for static equipment and piping.
- Coordinate with Inspection teams to ensure effective implementation and continuous improvement of RBI outcomes.
3. Integrity Operating Windows (IOWs).
- Establish, monitor, and maintain Integrity Operating Windows (IOWs) for critical corrosion-influencing parameters (temperature, pressure, pH, H₂S, chloride levels, flow velocity).
- Lead investigations into IOW exceedances, collaborating with Operations and Process teams to assess impact and recommend corrective actions.
- Integrate IOW data into RBI updates and corrosion management strategies.
4. Turnaround (TAR) & Project Support.
- Define corrosion and RBI scopes for major turnarounds, including risk-based inspection prioritization and contingency planning.
- Provide on-site technical leadership during turnaround execution for anomaly resolution, repair decisions, and integrity risk assessments.
- Support capital projects with materials/corrosion reviews, design integrity input, and Management of Change (MOC) evaluations.
5. Compliance, Reporting & Leadership.
- Ensure adherence to API, ASME, NACE/AMPP, and company integrity standards, as well as local and jurisdictional regulations.
- Develop and track corrosion KPIs, RBI health metrics, integrity dashboards, and executive management reports.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers; build team competency in corrosion, RBI, and integrity management.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives, including adoption of advanced NDE, predictive analytics, and digital twin technologies.
6. Technical Support and Analysis
- Provides optimal technical support, coaching, and qualitative, quantitative, or semi-quantitative Risk Based Inspection (RBI) technical analysis support for downstream.
- Conduct RBI Evergreening Study (RBI in APM Software) (Asset Performance Management).
7. Risk of Failure Assessment
- Coordinate and provide guidance to assess the risk of failure in relation to a level that is acceptable, and inspection and repair are used to ensure that, consistently, the level of risk is below that acceptance limit.
- Examines the HSE and business risk of ‘active’ and ‘potential’ Damage Mechanisms (DMs) to assess and rank failure probability and consequence to optimize inspection intervals based on site-acceptable risk levels and operating limits.
- Lead the estimated Probability of Failure (PoF) on the basis of the types of degradation mechanisms operating in the component.
- Consequence of Failure (CoF):
- Estimate the Consequence of Failure (CoF) as the outcome of a failure based on the assumption that such a failure will occur.
8. Analysis Methodology
- Assure the accuracy of analysis methodology for data quality and consistency of execution.
- Assure the development and execution of precision analysis of the selected metrics and computational methods (Risk presented as a single numeric value).
9. Risk Matrix Analysis & Inspection Plan Development
- Coordinate the development of risk matrix analysis that is inherent with probabilities and consequences.
- Lead and advise the risk levels by developing a prioritized inspection plan for the Corrosion circuit and mitigate risks as appropriate.
