For our project in Egypt, we are looking for
Senior Tunnel Engineer- TBM, Drill and Blast-100% (m/f)
The ideal candidate should lead the design of underground infrastructure projects, including metro, railway, road, utility and hydraulic tunnels. You will need hands-on design experience with both TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) and Drill & Blast / conventional (NATM/SEM) methods. You will lead design packages from concept through detailed design, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and make sure the work is technically sound, safe and compliant with international standards.
Responsibilities:
Tunnel Design & Analysis
- Lead the conceptual, preliminary and detailed design of bored (TBM) and mined (Drill & Blast / NATM) tunnels, shafts, cross-passages, portals and caverns.
- Design segmental linings for TBM tunnels: segment geometry, ring configuration, reinforcement (conventional and steel fiber), gaskets, and checks for handling, stacking and TBM thrust-jack loads.
- Design primary and final support systems for Drill & Blast tunnels, including shotcrete, rock bolts, steel ribs, lattice girders, fore poling, spiles and pipe-roof umbrellas.
- Carry out 2D and 3D numerical analyses (FEM/FDM) of tunnel–ground interaction, lining forces, face stability and surface settlement.
- Develop rock mass and soil classifications (RMR, Q-system, GSI) and define support classes and excavation sequences.
- Assess settlement and ground-movement effects on existing buildings, utilities and infrastructure, and design mitigation measures.
- Perform face-pressure calculations and specify TBM type (EPB, Slurry, Hard Rock / Gripper, Double Shield) based on ground conditions.
- Design waterproofing and drainage systems (open and closed systems, membranes, grouting).
- Contribute to blast design reviews, vibration assessments and overbreak control criteria.
Technical Leadership & Coordination
- Lead and review calculations, drawings and reports.
- Coordinate with geotechnical, structural, MEP, railway systems, fire and life safety, and ventilation teams.
- Prepare and review design basis reports, calculation reports, specifications, drawings and method statements.
- Develop and review instrumentation and monitoring plans (convergence, extensometers, inclinometers, settlement points) and define trigger levels.
- Support construction-phase design services, including back-analysis, observational-method reviews, non-conformance resolution and design changes.
- Take part in client meetings, design reviews, value engineering workshops and technical presentations.
- Help prepare bids and technical proposals, including design methodology, staffing and man-hour estimates.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure designs comply with relevant codes and guidelines (Eurocodes, ITA/AITES, BTS, DAUB, ACI, ÖGG, Egyptian Code) and project specifications.
- Identify geotechnical and construction risks, and contribute to risk registers and mitigation strategies.
- Apply the company's QA/QC procedures to all deliverables.
Requirements:
- B.Sc. in Civil Engineering (required).

M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Geotechnical, Tunnel or Structural Engineering (strongly preferred).

10–15 years of professional experience, mostly in tunnel design.
- Proven design experience with both TBM and Drill & Blast tunnelling methods (mandatory).
- Experience on at least two major tunnelling projects (metro, rail, road, water or sewer tunnels) through the full design cycle.
- Experience in both soft ground and rock conditions.

Experience in Egypt, the Middle East or on international projects is an advantage.

Advanced skills in numerical modeling software such as PLAXIS 2D/3D, FLAC, RS2/RS3 (Rocscience), Midas GTS NX or ABAQUS.
- Proficiency in structural analysis software (SAP2000, ETABS, SOFiSTiK, or similar).
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and BIM tools (Revit, Navisworks) is preferred.
- Strong understanding of rock mechanics, soil mechanics, ground improvement and groundwater control.

Familiarity with TBM operation parameters, segment manufacturing, and Drill & Blast construction practice.

Membership in the Egyptian Syndicate of Engineers (required).
- Chartered or professional engineer status (PE, CEng, or equivalent) is a plus.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills in English; Arabic is an advantage.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving and team-management skills.
- Able to manage multiple deliverables and meet tight deadlines.
- Willing to visit sites in Egypt and abroad as needed.
