Alsama began in January 2020 as a small girls’ empowerment centre, teaching awareness, cricket, and yoga to a few dozen teenage girls in the Shatila refugee camp in Beirut. Many of the girls could barely read and write. But it didn’t take long and they had caught the scent of education, wanting more. They asked us to teach them English, to help them to budget, to properly learn to read and write their mother tongue, Arabic. So we established an education institute and expanded our cricket hubs. We are now teaching and empowering ~880 students across 2 refugee camps – as well as sponsoring our most talented students at partner secondary schools towards university and providing employment to mothers through our social enterprise.

WHAT WE DO Our projects focus on the social and psychological well being of young people in a country that is plagued by sectarianism and a history of violence. We believe in the participation and empowerment of young people, not only for the future as they take up their various roles and responsibilities in society, but with regards to relevant issues that concern them now. The emerging generation does not possess the baggage of the past and they are naturally future-orientated. We seek to educate them in the past so as to learn from and prevent repeating cycles of violence and division, whilst equipping them for a future defined by justice, peace and reconciliation. Lebanon can be beacon of hope in a largely destabilized region. Recent political protests have shown this to be true, as Lebanon’s diverse people groups have come together nonviolently to unite around common goals as they seek justice and reform. And as is often the way in such revolutions, young people are at the forefront. Our forgiveness and peace curriculum leads participants on a journey of understanding with regards to transforming conflict and preventing violence. Broadly speaking, this can be broken down into 3 main areas: Encountering God Exploring the self Understanding the ‘other’ We have developed adaptations of our curriculum to work with all age groups throughout school to adulthood; these have already been adopted by a number of schools that we work with in Lebanon. Whilst our core values and beliefs are informed by our Christian faith, our curriculum remains applicable in both secular and religious contexts.

We are a community of families whose children currently attend a forest school based around Beirut, Lebanon, and others who believe in alternative and democratic education, and cooperating with similar initiatives and strengthen the reality of alternative education. Together we are also creating a primary school that would reflect our values around education and pedagogy. We believe in alternative education based on the children’s well-being besides centering differentiated instruction, self-directed inquiry, experiential learning, creativity, joy, the bond with nature. We also aspire to informal, respectful, intimate and cooperative relations between the students and educators and among themselves. And we seek that children interact with free, self-esteem, empathetic, love and egalitarian elements in the culture of Lebanon, the region and humanity at large, where we also opt for the inclusion of the Arabic language beside other languages.
