Mechanic

Job Purpose

To assist in the maintenance and upkeep of all MAG Lebanon programme vehicles and mechanical assets.

To carry out preventive and corrective maintenance, fault diagnosis, repair and overhaul of MAG Lebanon fleet vehicles and mechanical/machine assets, with particular responsibility for machines mechanical and hydraulic systems, in order to keep equipment safe, reliable and operational.

Principal Responsibilities:

1. To ensure all MAG vehicles and mechanical assets are in a safe, roadworthy condition at all times.
2. Undertake scheduled servicing, preventive maintenance, inspections, fault diagnosis, repairs and component replacement/overhaul on fleet vehicles and machine assets under the direction of the Mechanical Support Manager (MSM).
3. Diagnose and repair machine hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, cylinders, control valves, hoses, pipes, fittings, filters and related components; carry out pressure/flow checks and identify internal or external leakage, overheating and slow/weak hydraulic functions.
4. Use service manuals, technical specifications, hydraulic and electrical schematics, diagnostic equipment and appropriate test instruments to identify faults and verify repairs.
5. Carry out breakdown and field repairs when required, including safe recovery/temporary repair actions where appropriate, and perform post-repair operational checks.
6. Inspect equipment condition, identify recurring faults or fleet trends, and report findings, recommended corrective actions, parts requirements and expected downtime to the MSM.
7. Operate and accommodate at different MAG locations according to programme needs and undertake other appropriate mechanical tasks as directed by MSM.
8. Work safely, and in accordance with the guidelines set by workshop management staff.
9. Undertake any other task required to keep the machine assets and fleet vehicles running smoothly, as directed by the workshop management staff.
10. Operate and accommodate at different locations according to the needs.

Communication and Reporting:

1. Ensure that the MSM is fully briefed on all mechanical issues and any key difficulties arising.
2. Submit clear and accurate inspection, diagnosis, repair and maintenance reports/job records as directed by the MSM if required.

Essential requirements (Skills):

1. Technical diploma, vocational certificate or recognized trade qualification in automotive mechanics, diesel mechanics, heavy equipment mechanics or a related mechanical field; equivalent proven practical experience may be considered.
2. Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in maintenance and repair of a mixed vehicle fleet and mechanical/machine assets, including light vehicles/4x4s, trucks and heavy or construction-type equipment.
3. Strong working knowledge of diesel engines, fuel and cooling systems, transmissions, drivetrains, differentials/axles, steering, suspension and braking systems.
4. Ability to diagnose basic vehicle and machine simple electrical faults using a multi-meter and diagnostic/scan tools, and to understand wiring diagrams.
5. Ability to read and interpret hydraulic schematics, electrical diagrams, workshop/service manuals, technical specifications and parts information.
6. Competent and safe use of workshop hand tools, power tools, lifting equipment, jacks/stands, torque tools and mechanical/hydraulic test equipment.
7. Strong troubleshooting ability and a practical, systematic approach to fault finding; able to work independently on breakdowns as well as effectively within a workshop team.
8. Ability to assess component condition, determine repair versus replacement needs, identify required spare parts and provide clear technical findings to the line manager.
9. Basic computer literacy and ability to complete maintenance records, job cards and simple technical reports in an accurate and timely manner.
10. Valid public driving licence and willingness/ability to travel and work at different MAG locations and in field conditions when required.
11. Good communication and teamwork skills, with a strong commitment to safe working practices, accountability, reliability and continuous improvement.

Desirable requirements:

• Experience maintaining specialized, remote-controlled, demining, rubble-removal or other heavy-duty machine assets.
• Basic welding, fabrication and metal-repair skills.
• Experience with hydraulic flow testing, advanced diagnostic equipment and/or manufacturer-specific diagnostic systems; a heavy-vehicle driving licence is an advantage.
• Proven practical experience in hydraulic systems, including troubleshooting and repair of hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, control valves, hoses and fittings, and the ability to carry out hydraulic pressure testing and diagnose leakage, pressure loss, overheating or slow/weak functions.
