Summary

Creative Space Beirut (CSB) is an independent design school committed to widening access to high-quality design education. CSB provides a tuition-free three-year fashion design program and supports students and alumni through hands-on learning, mentorship and pathways into the fashion and creative industries.

CSB is launching Beyond the Studio – Fashion Practice and Professional Growth Masterclasses, a continuing education program for young creatives. This program is implemented by Creative Space Beirut, in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Lebanese Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA), commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The program aims to increase employment and income opportunities for young creatives by strengthening technical skills, career readiness, and employer engagement.

Central to this approach is a series of applied, participatory masterclasses delivered by experienced practitioners and facilitators. Each masterclass focuses on a specific, practical competency participants need in real workplace situations, built around applied exercises, real scenarios and direct feedback, so participants leave with concrete tools they can use immediately. Trainers are asked to bring both subject-matter expertise and strong facilitation skills, translating their own professional experience into structured, accessible learning for a diverse cohort of emerging designers and creatives.

Dependency / Stakeholders

CSB Program Coordination Team, participating cohort learners (~12–20, closer to 12–15 if highly tactile), and, where relevant, a textile specialist, supplier, sourcing professional, production manager or mill/importer contributing a visit, clinic or case, arranged by CSB.

Employment Type

Consultancy – specialist masterclass trainer; approximately 12 contact hours for the initial run. Additional runs may be commissioned depending on participant demand, program capacity and trainer availability; exact session format co-developed with CSB.

Remuneration

€700–€850 for the agreed initial scope of work, including preparation, approximately 12 contact hours of delivery, coordination, review and participant feedback. The final fee will reflect the confirmed course scope and contact hours agreed with CSB. Any additional run will be subject to participant demand, program capacity and trainer availability, and will be agreed and remunerated separately.

Scope

The Trainer is responsible for delivering the Material Intelligence: Textiles, Composition & Sourcing masterclass – a specialist working-brief module under CSB’s Production & Technical Readiness track within the Beyond the Studio program.

The role includes building participants’ professional material literacy so they can select, evaluate and source materials based on design intent, technical performance, production reality and commercial constraints, answering the core professional competency: can the participant select, evaluate and source materials based on design intent, technical performance, production reality and commercial constraints?

The position requires strong applied facilitation skills across fiber/composition, fabric construction and behavior, drape/stretch/recovery/stability/weight/hand, material-to-silhouette/end-use decisions, quality recognition, sourcing and supplier communication, and MOQ/lead time/availability/substitution/yield/waste and cost implications, co-developing the final session structure with CSB within the agreed program framework.

This role does not include basic fabric identification, highly academic textile science, textile design, exhaustive fiber history, general sustainability theory, or duplication of production-workflow content.

Responsibilities

1. Session Design and Delivery

Design and facilitate applied sessions covering fiber/composition, fabric construction and behavior, drape/stretch/recovery/stability/weight/hand, material-to-silhouette/end-use decisions, quality recognition, and sourcing and supplier communication.
Guide participants toward a material specification and sourcing package for a real product – primary/alternative materials, rationale, performance requirements, sourcing route, MOQ/lead time and cost implications – as session output.
Deliver the agreed contact hours for the initial run with a tactile in-person component, with theory/research sessions delivered online or hybrid where appropriate, and supplier/site visits encouraged where feasible.
Integrate supplier research, sourcing databases/tools, specification/documentation, cost comparison and digital material libraries into session content.
Advise CSB/Program Coordination on whether a textile specialist, supplier, sourcing professional, production manager or mill/importer would strengthen delivery through a visit, clinic or case, and help integrate their contribution into the session once arranged.
Work with participants who bring a live product or sourcing challenge where possible, building session content around that material.

2. Proposal, Coordination and Reporting

Propose recommended contact hours and session rhythm within the working course model.
Propose participant pre-work and prerequisites.
Propose applied exercises and the final output/evidence participants will produce.
Propose a feedback/critique approach and any between-session work.
Propose required materials, software, equipment or venue conditions.
Flag accessibility/support considerations and realistic group-size limits.
Co-develop and confirm the final session structure with CSB within the agreed program framework.

Minimum Requirements & Skills

Core Competencies

Textile/material specialist, sourcing professional, designer with deep textile expertise, production/product-development professional or textile educator with current industry knowledge.
Ability to translate professional practice into an applied, participatory masterclass format.
Skilled in structuring feedback/critique on material specification and sourcing packages.
Clear written and verbal communication.
Comfortable facilitating groups of ~12–20 participants, closer to 12–15 if highly tactile.
Professional conduct that reflects CSB’s values.

Technical Qualifications

Current industry knowledge of textiles, composition and sourcing.
Comfortable with supplier research, sourcing databases/tools, specification/documentation and digital material libraries.
Available to deliver a tactile in-person component, with theory/research sessions online or hybrid, and supplier/site visits where feasible.
Able to work within a ~12 contact-hour initial-run commitment, with openness to additional runs depending on demand, program capacity and trainer availability.
