The RoleWe are seeking an experienced Senior Commercial Engineer to provide technical-commercial leadership across engineering and construction projects, supporting cost management, contract administration, procurement, tendering, change management, commercial risk, and project financial performance.
The ideal candidate will combine engineering knowledge with strong commercial and contractual expertise to evaluate project requirements, assess costs and risks, manage variations and claims, review contractor and supplier proposals, and provide practical recommendations to project leadership. This role will work closely with Engineering, Project Management, Procurement, Finance, Contracts, Construction, and external stakeholders to ensure commercial decisions are technically sound and aligned with project objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- * Provide senior technical-commercial advice throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review project scope, engineering requirements, specifications, drawings, schedules, contracts, and commercial conditions.
- Translate technical requirements into commercial implications, cost considerations, and contractual obligations.
- Support development of commercial strategies aligned with project objectives and business requirements.
- Participate in project feasibility studies, cost assessments, procurement strategies, and commercial planning.
- Develop and maintain project commercial plans covering costs, contracts, procurement, variations, risks, claims, and reporting requirements.
- Review project budgets, cost plans, estimates, and financial forecasts from a technical-commercial perspective.
- Analyze project cost drivers and identify opportunities for cost optimization and value improvement.
- Review engineering designs and proposed technical solutions for commercial impact, constructability, lifecycle cost, and contractual compliance.
- Work with Engineering teams to evaluate alternative technical solutions and assess their cost and commercial implications.
- Support value-engineering initiatives by evaluating alternative materials, systems, specifications, construction methods, and delivery approaches.
- Prepare commercial comparisons and recommendations for alternative technical solutions.
- Review bills of quantities, schedules of rates, cost breakdowns, and pricing structures.
- Validate quantities, rates, assumptions, exclusions, allowances, and commercial qualifications.
- Support development and review of tender documents, requests for proposals, pricing schedules, and commercial requirements.
- Participate in tender evaluations and technical-commercial assessments of contractor and supplier proposals.
- Evaluate supplier and contractor quotations for scope compliance, pricing, technical requirements, commercial terms, and risk exposure.
- Normalize competing bids and identify differences in assumptions, exclusions, quantities, rates, and contractual conditions.
- Prepare tender evaluation reports and commercial recommendations for management approval.
- Support commercial negotiations with contractors, suppliers, consultants, and specialist service providers.
- Develop negotiation strategies based on technical requirements, market conditions, cost analysis, and contractual positions.
- Review contract terms, specifications, pricing schedules, payment mechanisms, performance obligations, warranties, and liability provisions.
- Identify commercial risks, ambiguities, inconsistencies, and unfavorable contractual provisions.
- Support contract drafting, review, negotiation, award, and administration activities.
- Monitor contractor and supplier compliance with contractual obligations.
- Review payment applications, progress claims, invoices, and supporting documentation.
- Validate completed quantities, milestone achievements, deliverables, and contractual entitlement before payment approval.
- Coordinate with Quantity Surveying, Cost Control, Finance, and Project Management teams on payment certification and commercial reporting.
- Manage the commercial aspects of variations, change orders, additional works, omissions, and scope changes.
- Assess the technical and commercial impact of proposed changes.
- Prepare and review variation quotations, cost assessments, supporting calculations, and commercial recommendations.
- Verify contractor and supplier pricing for changes against contract rates, market conditions, and applicable commercial principles.
- Maintain variation registers and monitor the status, value, approval, and implementation of changes.
- Identify potential claims and commercial disputes at an early stage.
- Support preparation, evaluation, negotiation, and resolution of contractual claims.
- Analyze entitlement, causation, valuation, and contractual provisions associated with claims.
- Review extension-of-time submissions and assess their commercial implications in coordination with planning and project controls teams.
- Support delay and disruption assessments where commercial impact is involved.
- Coordinate with project schedulers and planners to evaluate the cost implications of delays, acceleration, disruption, and changes in sequencing.
- Maintain commercial risk registers and monitor financial exposure throughout project delivery.
- Quantify potential commercial risks and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Monitor cost commitments, approved changes, forecast final costs, and commercial exposure.
- Analyze actual costs against budgets, contract values, forecasts, and approved variations.
- Coordinate with Finance and Project Controls to ensure commercial data is accurately reflected in project financial reporting.
- Support monthly commercial reporting, forecasting, and management reviews.
- Prepare commercial dashboards covering contract values, commitments, variations, claims, payments, risks, and forecast outcomes.
- Provide senior management with clear analysis of project commercial performance and emerging issues.
- Review procurement strategies and identify opportunities to improve cost, supplier performance, contractual protection, and delivery outcomes.
- Support supplier and contractor prequalification, commercial due diligence, and performance assessments.
