What to say when the salary is not listed
Ask whether your range fits before you invest in a third interview. You can do it without naming a number first.
Silence on pay is not always a trick
Some posts leave the range off because the band is wide, the market moved, or nobody updated the form. You still need to know if the conversation is possible.
Asking early is politer than discovering the gap after three rounds.
Ask them to go first
“What range is budgeted for this role?” is a complete question. You do not have to attach your number to it.
If they bounce it back, give a band you would actually accept, not a wish. Say it is based on the scope in the posting.
Where to ask
The recruiter screen is the right place. The hiring manager interview is late. A message before you apply is fair if the form demands a number and the post gives none.
Ask once, clearly. A joke about “market rate” is not an ask.
A line you can use
“Before we book the next conversation, can you share the range budgeted for this role? I want to be sure I am in it.”
If they will not say, decide whether you will keep going. Hope is not a strategy, and neither is a fake number.
Write the number down
When they name a band, repeat it back and note it. Later offers sometimes drift. You want their sentence, not your memory of it.
If the top of the band is below what you need, say so then. Thank them and leave the process while it is still cheap for both of you.
